Baja California Sur: April 2007
The creative energy and contagious enthusiasm of EPI Baja California Sur alumni has enriched and enlivened the La Paz campus. A few walls of the once stark campus have been brighten by the mural paintings of 10 local students from the communities of Loreto and La Paz who just finished participating in the first-ever 4-day Conservation Leadership Workshop hosted by EPI.
During the workshop students dedicated hours of their time to designing and painting inspiring murals. In addition to dirtying their bodies and clothes with paint while listening to lively music and allowing their creative energies to beautify a concrete wall, students spent time deepening their understanding of the conservation of Baja California Sur, as well as developing leadership skills. They visited local sites that tell conservation stories, such as Balandra and the Museo de la Ballena. They engaged with professionals working toward the conservation of Baja California Sur during presentations from representatives of other local and regional environmental non-profit organizations. While furthering their understanding of local conservation successes, challenges, and strategies, they also spent time discussing ways in which they can take their interests and involvement to the next level, specifically what they can do as individuals and as a group of high school students to influence and effect conservation by serving as youth leaders in their communities.
Much thanks to Yuridia, Desiree, Citlalli, Omar, Sarahi, Sandra, Olivia, Bruno, Erika, and Karina for dedicating their time and energy to promote conservation in Baja California Sur.
