Changing the Research Paradigm
EPI shares its collaborative vision and partnerships with researchers
from around the world by attending international scientific symposia.
Presenting EPI's conservation model and projects at these meetings
allows our students to influence the greater scientific community.
If you would like copies of any of our symposium presentations,
the Conservation Biology article, or our video "Lessons
from Pacuare," please contact us. We're happy to send
them to you.
International Sea Turtle Symposia (ISTS):
• EPI was featured twice at the 26th Annual ISTS in April 2006.
Jennifer Palmer presented her research with Wallace J. Nichols
comparing EPI's program with several other organizations' efforts in
"A Case-Study Comparison of Communication Strategies for Sea
Turtle Conservation." In addition, EPI shared results from
our three year partnership with the Charles Darwin Foundation in the
Galapagos Islands, Ecaudor, in a poster titled "Student-Scientist
Partnerships Invest Galápagos Residents in Conservation."
• EPI was also featured twice at the 25th Annual ISTS in January 2005.
Jennifer Palmer presented her master's thesis research examining
the impacts of EPI's Sea Turtle Ecology Program (STEP)
"Conserving sea turtles through local education: STEP success
in Costa Rica." In addition, EPI staff hosted a lunchtime
workshop on outreach through experiential education.
• In February 2004, EPI shared techniques and results from our
first four years in the field at the 24th ISTS held in San José,
Costa Rica. See our powerpoint presentation "It
Takes a Village: Local Students as a Catalyst for Sea Turtle Conservation,"
and accompanying notes to learn more about how EPI works.
• In March, 2003 EPI presented a poster titled, "Community
Involvement in Sea Turtle Monitoring Projects: Education Makes a
Difference," about our student program in Costa Rica,
to the 23rd ISTS in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
• In February 2001, EPI presented a video documentary on our work,
"Lessons from Pacuare," and a poster entitled
"Students as Researchers in Sea Turtle Monitoring Projects"
at the 21st ISTS in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Society of Conservation Biology (SCB):
• In February 2002, EPI's work was featured in the Journal of the
Society of Conservation Biology in an article titled, "Outreach
and Partnership Programs for Conservation Education Where Endangered
Species Conservation and Research Occur," by Dr. Carol
Brewer.
Ecological Society of America (ESA):
• In August 2001, EPI presented a poster of our work to the scientists
of the Ecological Society of America at their annual conference
in Madison, Wisconsin. |
