Omar Leon

“After my EPI course I think that I am more conscious of the environment. I look forward to participating in more educational projects in Loreto and passing on the new knowledge.”

A Fisherman Goes Green

From a family of fisherman, Omar grew up learning to take from the Sea of Cortez. His EPI experience moved him to give back.

Omar’s father and uncles have been fishermen for a long time. After studying Alternative Tourism at a local university, he now only fishes weekends and free days because his academic pursuits keep him occupied.

Omar was curious about marine life in the Sea of Cortez, so he signed up for EPI’s Whale course to learn more. By the end of the program and after spending time with our instructors, he discovered that Marine Biology was more exciting and interesting than he had previously thought. He was amazed by all that could be studied about a single species. Omar’s participation with EPI has made him truly an exception to typical fisherman, and he is now aware of and observes responsible fishery practices.
