Johan Gatgens
Costa Rica Instructor
Johan is originally from Costa Rica and is based in Sarapiquí, Heredia.
He holds a bachelor's degree in Biology and a master's degree from the University of Costa Rica, with expertise in environmental education, biological monitoring, telemetry, and GIS. His research has focused on endangered amphibian species, including Atelopus varius and Craugastor ranoides, and he has experience working with students at both the primary and secondary school levels. Johan is also an avid birder with hands-on experience using mist nets.
He is excited to join EPI for the opportunity to both share his knowledge and continue learning — particularly through fieldwork alongside international and national students. He is motivated by the prospect of making a meaningful impact on the students he works with.
In his free time, Johan enjoys birdwatching, reading, listening to music, and watching documentaries.
