Pablo Herrera
Costa Rica Instructor
Pablo Herrera was born in San José, Costa Rica, but grew up in Alajuela, in the La Trinidad neighborhood. His family moved when he was about 12, and he has been living in Escazú since then.
He is a Marine Biologist, though day to day he is often in "guide mode." He has done lab work with marine organisms and has worked in Paquera–Tambor using fisheries records to track changes in octopus fishing over time, while gaining firsthand insight into coastal community life. He has guided many student groups at the La Salle Natural Sciences Museum, translating big topics like biodiversity, Earth history, and conservation for different age groups. He also volunteered at Toucan Rescue Ranch, where he saw up close what wildlife rescue involves and how central education is to that work.
He currently works with FUNDECOR guiding school trips, with close attention to group dynamics and helping students connect with nature in a meaningful way. He has also participated in a "Fondo Azul" proposal with MarViva and Costa Rica por Siempre focused on improving longline fishing practices and reducing bycatch.
Pablo is excited to join EPI because it feels like a natural step. He enjoys working with students and values learning experiences that go beyond the classroom — being outside, seeing things firsthand, and making science feel real. Having mostly done short visits or one-day trips in previous roles, he looks forward to spending more time with a group and building something deeper over the course of a program. As a marine biologist, he is especially glad that EPI's work includes coastal ecosystems like mangroves and beaches, where students can witness conservation issues up close and feel like active participants.
In his free time, Pablo tries to stay active — going to the gym and swimming whenever he can. He enjoys movies and the cinema, and given the chance, he prefers to be outdoors, especially near the ocean, snorkeling or diving and observing marine life, particularly invertebrates. At home, he also enjoys video games, including strategy titles like Age of Empires II and StarCraft, and action-horror games like Resident Evil.
