Join EPI and an experienced cohort of educators in the field to gain experiencing integrating field research, experiential learning and NGSS standards with practical methods you can bring back to the classroom.

Course Description:
During this field-based course you will learn teaching strategies and tools developed by Ecology Project International (EPI) for creating and delivering authentic science lessons aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Through participation in authentic research and conservation projects, you will develop your ecological knowledge and hone your science process skills. You’ll learn strategies for helping your students observe, question, discuss and conduct independent scientific research. You’ll increase your comfort with lesson planning using NGSS, and better understand how to teach science in and out of the regular classroom. You will leave the course with a lesson plan you have created to use at home, a template for creating future lesson and/or unit plans on your own, and resources to support and guide you on your teacher journey.

Expected Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to

  • read and interpret the NGSS for use in their classroom
  • create NGSS aligned lessons using the 5E Learning Cycle
  • understand and correctly implement a variety of field research methods
  • use research supported teaching methods, tools, and strategies for supporting students in growing their science process skills
  • recognize and collaborate with the research and conservation partners available in their home community
